How do you guys do it? Our 2004 Envoy has 103,000 miles and the engine bay shows it. No significant leaks, but it’s dirty as hell in there. I don’t want to just go blasting it with a hose, but I also don’t have the time or patience to go in there and clean it all by hand. What do you guys recommend?
Viper 488 for your time.

So you’re too lazy to do it the right way, but too cautious to do it the lazy way?
Fuck it, buy a new one :3

I cover the alternator and any sensitive electrical components then spray it down with simple green. I use a brush to give things a gentle scrub, then lightly spray off everything with a hose. Don’t do this on a hot engine and you shouldn’t have any issues.

All I want is a lazy, yet responsible way to get things done? Is this not still America???

Cover alternator with a plastic bag and cover battery if it isn’t protected.
Make sure engine is cool!
Rinse with water, liberally spray with a strong degreaser or all purpose cleaner, start scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly but gently. Spray cleaner back onto areas you missed, re-scrub, rinse. If you want you can dress the black plastics after drying.
Here is a good video about how to do it. On this car he doesn’t cover up the alternator, but on most cars you need to. Better to be safe than sorry right?
This is pretty much how I do all the cars I detail

Car on, pressure washer and engine degreaser. Just be sure not to hit the drive belts.

I warm it up, do it after driving. I get a spray bottle with a mix of degreaser, strength depends on the job, hit the tough stuff with a little spray can degreaser, I try to use the orange stuff. Let it sit a minute and then use another spray bottle to rinse it a bit. I have a long handled scrub brush to break stuff up. I just did this on my Z before cars and coffee this week, I have been cleaning the engine bay over time, it was so layered on from sitting I started by removing leaves and stuff and then just hit it gently in some areas every month or so. The electrical is not new in it, especially on one side of the bay I have a bunch of electrical bound together so I had to carefully clean that up. The good spray bottles, like the Zep ones are best, good pressure.

Just pull the motor, clean then reinstall! Then use the excuse to slap performance parts into the motor! That's what did with my 68. Also was able then to detail the entire engine compartment.

See? I don’t know why more people don’t get classic muscle. It takes, what, 30 minutes to pull an engine? XD

My grandpa and I have done a pull and replace in a weekend before. My grandpa though has the record at pulling a running motor out, rebuild it (rings, bearings, gaskets) and back in and running in just under 36 hours.,
